Ingrowing Toe Nail

A very common and painful condition where in the edge of your nail pierces and grows into the skin rather than coming out hence the name as the nail is growing into the skin.

This leads to infection and pain and swelling with pus formation.

Most commonly this is a problem of young age. Too tight narrow footwear, cutting the nails with too much curve, sports where there is repeated trauma to the toes. All of these might be the reason for ingrown toe nail.

Sometimes even without the above mentioned reasons this might happen and there might be some anatomical reason for this wherein the toe is not straight.

Treatment of ingrown toe nail is surgical removal of the nail which is done under local or general anaesthesia depending upon the patient profile.

There will be a dressing after the surgery which would be changed after 2 days and then one more dressing change if needed.

You will be advised to avoid driving for a week or so otherwise no restriction to day to day activity is needed.

To avoid recurrence one must avoid wearing narrow footwear, nails must be trimmed straight.
